It has, unless I misunderstand what they mean by "double consonants". Contrast:
bookkeeper vs. beekeeper
thick cut vs. thicket
hat tip vs. patty
long glide vs. bigger
bored dog vs. boredom
brave victim vs. braving the elements
etc, etc.

Right, but with the exception of "bookkeeper", those are all phrases, not words. And even "bookkeeper" is a compound word.
