I think it's worded like that to emphasize that DMs are private, as opposed to regular twitter posts. That and there's also a tab for "DMs you've sent to other people".

Oddly, I think it would be okay if they added a comma or colon:
"Direct Messages, sent only to you" or "Direct Messages: sent only to you".
