I'm still trying to teach myself Python, but I get confounded by the syntax, wishing it was more like Perl. ;)

Oh man I cannot tell if you're being serious or not :p

Kind of serious, yeah. I first started learning Perl so I could understand what the LJ backend does. Then I was hearing all this stuff about how wonderful Python is (OK, mostly from xkcd), but it's a whole new syntax that I have to learn.

I hear ya, I hear ya. Though for me it was Ruby, not Python. And though it was *nice*, I never got to use it, so it never really stuck.

So pardon the dumb question, but why did you not write your s2commit script in Perl instead of bash?

It was originally supposed to... not do as much as it ended up doing, and it seemed easier in bash at the time.

Though given the lack of an associative array in bash, or nice string handling, plus the lack of it on windows, maybe I should reconsider.

(Unless you are volunteering? *grin*)

I figure that since the "Windows workflow instructions" are already going to require Perl for mart's s2up.pl script, might as well re-write the script to also use Perl. I'm looking it over, but I can't guarantee that I'll write beautiful Perl. ;)

if you write it, I'll replace mine with yours :)

PS. can I make a feature request? If you could automatically detect the layer id based on the layername (/customize/advanced/layerbrowse.bml?id=$layername/layout)? I was too lazy to do it in bash because UGLY UGLY bash doesn't process text too well, and I was too lazy to dig out awk/sed etc.
